Running for a Cause Close to Our Hearts 💙

Earlier this year, my wife and I experienced the heartbreak of losing our baby through an early miscarriage. It was a deeply emotional time, and something that quietly but profoundly affected us both. It’s not something that I’ve really talked about or shared unlike my brave and beautiful wife, who couldn’t have made me prouder on how she managed in such an emotional and upsetting time.

A week prior to hearing the heartbreaking news that there was no longer a heartbeat for our baby, we happened to be in London with family and friends when the London Landmarks Half Marathon was taking place. We were walking through London watching successful runners passing us and our children cheering on the runners I said I need to set myself a charity fitness challenge for this year. Watching that race unfold—seeing people running for causes they cared deeply about—planted a seed.

On the morning we learnt of our miscarriage, I received an email from the Tommy’s charity about running for them in the London Landmarks half marathon. Unbeknownst to us at that time, that later that day, that charity would become closer to our hearts.

This year, I’ve decided to take on that very same race, and I’ll be running it for Tommy’s, a charity that means a great deal to us. Tommy’s funds vital research into miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature birth, and supports families through some of the toughest moments imaginable. In a time of our heart break, we were told by a medical professional that our miscarriage was “just one of those things” - I knew I wanted to support this charity…. Their work has helped so many and they hold a special place in the hearts of many of our friends and family too who have suffered or can relate to this cause.

While I’ve always loved a good fitness challenge, most of mine have been on two wheels. Running has been more of a stop-start journey for me, but I’ve recently been working to rekindle that passion. A half marathon is no small feat—especially when you’ve only ever run 10K a handful of times in your 35 years! I’m pushing myself not just to complete it, but to aim for a time under 2 hours with an aim for the 1:48mark.

This run is personal. It’s about honouring our experience, raising awareness, and helping Tommy’s continue their vital work. If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, it would mean the world to me to smash the target!
